Commission - Bryn Du Mansion...

The Bryn Du Commission, since its appointment in 2004, has made great strides towards reaching the goal of making the facility self-sufficient while serving the greater good of the Granville community. A part-time Director has been hired, restrooms and a kitchen have been completed in the mansion, basketball courts have been set up in the Field House (tennis building), the Commission has formed an Ohio corporation and will soon be making application for 501(c) 3 (non-profit) status, scheduling an increasing number of events (both public and private), been the location for the 2005 Granville High School prom, been host to two art shows and the Bicentennial Gala, and has secured a $250,000 grant from the State of Ohio.

The Commission meets the 4th Wednesday of each month at 7:00pm in the Mansion. The public is always welcome.

Please feel free to give the Bryn Du Commission your suggestions and comments here.

Some of you may remember when the front porch was a very important part of the feel of a neighborhood. Neighbors would wave to passersby, or stop to chat along their way to the store. Now, using the power of the Web, you can let the Granville community know about upcoming public events in your neighborhood, such as meetings, dances, and yard sales. Also, if your neighborhood does not already have a website, a topic can be established here, and this can be your neighborhood’s free “Front Porch” to exchange local information and to stay in touch. OK Granville Teens. This is your area to let the adults know what you would like to see in Granville, and to tell us what we are doing right for you. Granville has been described by some teens as “living in a bubble”, “boring”, or “Mayberry RFD”. What could the community do for its teens (and youth), to make it more exciting? Be serious here – your suggestions may actually be implemented.

Local Public Utilities...

Did you grow tired of huddling around the fireplace this past Christmas just trying to stay warm? Have you noticed “Local Toll” charges on your phone bill, and can’t figure out how to use a “dial around code” to avoid them, or why your unlimited long distance carrier isn’t handling those calls instead of your local phone company? How will you deal with the expected price jumps for natural and propane gas this winter? Would you recommend your cable service company, and/or their internet cable service? What about your DSL service?

Here is an opportunity to voice your gripes, tips, and even pay a compliment to our public utility companies. For example, I for one, was very impressed with the way our Village water department kept us supplied with fresh water throughout the looooong power outage (8 days for my family) this past holiday season. “Good job folks!”

Granville Deer Population Control...

It continues to be a topic of concern among many in the area - "What can be done about the increasing numbers of deer?" While few dispute the fact that deer are a nuisance, the debate rages on about what measures can be taken to get them to a tolerable level. Village Council had a presentation at the March 16th, 2005 meeting by Bill Bollard, ODNR, with some discussion for possible steps. More recently, it was discussed at the Village Lights, Safety, Streets/Sidewalks Utility Committee. Brian Miller wrote a front page article for the September 22nd issue of the Granville Sentinel. A highly-charged topic here in Granville, to be sure! Landowners should certainly have the right to reap the benefits of what they have sown – that’s the “American Way”. But does it lead to high-density developments, resulting in more students moving into Granville, which then might lead to more pressure on our school district?

Here is an interesting, and thought-provoking, article from the September 16, 2005 print edition of “Columbus Business First”, titled “Ruling on land dispute puts annexation law in spotlight”.

There are a number of strategies being attempted, both in Granville, and other communities, but do they work? And can Granville afford to use them? Or, can Granville afford NOT to use them? Your thoughts and suggestions may help!

With the closing of Spring Valley, the membership at Lake Hudson has seen an increase. Many families in Granville join the YMCA, or the Heath Municipal Pool. The Purpose of this Community Forum...

Hi Granville, Ohio residents, and welcome to the 21st Century. Technology has finally enabled all citizens to have a voice in their own community.

In these pages you will find topics of interest to Granville residents. Feel free to post your thoughts, your wishes, and even your family vacation photos, beamed right from your cell phone, standing on the beaches of Waialea Beach of Hawaii! Why might you want to do this? Well, to let your friends and family see what you are seeing, or maybe just to make your neighbors jealous!

In this forum you will also have a “Bully Pulpit” to vent about current Village events, and a place to exchange tips and stories from other parents about our schools and teachers. The purpose and reach of this forum is limited only by how we choose to use it.

In short, this is my donation to Granville, Ohio - a gift of power - the power to communicate with the entire community, and even the world, about what a wonderful place Granville, Ohio is to live and work. And, just like Granville, this forum will continue to be a work in progress.

The Granville Bicentennial Gala, held Saturday, November, 26th, 2005, at the Bryn Du Mansion, was a huge success. Approximately 230 people were in attendence, with many wearing period attire. Carriage rides were offered by Granville Carriage Company (Diana Jones). Many people attending commented that it should become an annual event instead of only every 200 years.
